Pakistan’s bowling coach Morne Morkel resigned on Monday, just two days after the team’s disappointing early exit from the ICC ODI World Cup in India.

Morkel joined Pakistan on a six-month contract in June, following a stint with IPL franchise Lucknow Super Giants. His first assignment was Pakistan’s Test series in Sri Lanka.

However, the team struggled mightily at the World Cup under captain Babar Azam, losing five of their nine matches. This included defeats against rivals India and England, who knocked Pakistan out with a 93-run win on Saturday in Kolkata.

With his short tenure ending on a sour note, Morkel opted to resign from his role rather than see out his contract through the upcoming Test series in Australia. The PCB will name his replacement in due course.

Pakistan is slated to play three Tests against Australia from December 14, 2023 to January 7, 2024. The series will serve as an important rebuilding opportunity, but they will now undertake it without Morkel’s guidance.

His resignation underscores the need for a fresh approach and new perspective to revive Pakistan’s fortunes after their World Cup debacle.
