Young consumers between the ages of 11 and 26 are embracing online shopping in significant numbers, according to a high-ranking official from the e-commerce giant, Amazon. On Friday, during an interview at the ‘Amazon Xperience Arena,’ Saurabh Srivastava, the Vice President of Amazon Fashion India, revealed this emerging trend.

The Surge in Online Shopping Among Next-Generation Customers

He told “GenZ, what we call the next generation, customers 11 to 26 years old, they are adopting online shopping in a big way.”

Srivastava explained that the company has noticed a growing preference among customers from various demographics for premium products. Amazon Fashion operates as a subsidiary within the larger Amazon India umbrella.

To provide a sneak peek of its upcoming festive season sale, the Amazon Great India Festival (AGIF), the company hosted the ‘Amazon Xperience Arena’ at the Delhi College of Arts and Commerce. AGIF is set to kick off on October 8.

Starting from October 7, the company will grant early access to its premium subscribers.

Srivastava told “There are few trends…emerging that we are focused on. Customers across segments are looking for premium products. We are seeing a clear trend of premiumisation.”

He noted that there is a significant surge in demand for fashion and beauty products, while mobile phones, electronics, and home and kitchen appliances continue to be perennial favorites among customers.

During the company’s AGIF 2022, which commenced on September 22, 2022, a noteworthy 80 percent of its customer base hailed from tier 2 and smaller cities. Mobiles and accessories experienced robust double-digit growth in AGIF 2022 compared to Amazon Great Indian Festival (AGIF) 2021, and the figures were five times higher than the average business days. Srivastava emphasized that the business growth achieved during last year’s festive season sale has become the norm, and the company anticipates reaching new heights during the upcoming AGIF 2023.

E-commerce companies are estimated to have amassed a total sales figure of approximately Rs 40,000 crore during the initial phase of the festive season sales. According to a recent report from a market research firm, online sales for the forthcoming festive season are expected to grow by 18-20 percent, reaching a substantial Rs 90,000 crore this year.
