The Mumbai-born singer-songwriter Falu, along with her husband and fellow artist Gaurav Shah, worked together with Modi on the composition. Their creative partnership brought together folk music and contemporary beats to showcase millets.

The song is part of Modi’s initiative to promote millets as a nutritious and sustainable crop. Millets are small-seeded grasses with a long history in India but had fallen out of popularity over time. Modi has advocated reviving millets given their health and environmental benefits.

Falu disclosed the song emerged out of a meeting with Modi after her 2022 Grammy win for Best Children’s Album. They discussed music’s power to address societal issues, which led to the collaboration on a song about ending hunger. Intrigued by the idea, Falu proposed the joint effort, to which Modi agreed.

Falu Shah said “Prime Minister Modi has written a song with me and my husband Gaurav Shah.”

Released in June during the International Year of Millets, “Abundance in Millets” aims to spotlight millets as a solution for global hunger. With its fusion sound and prominent voice, the track creatively highlights the benefits of millets to a worldwide audience.

The nomination recognizes the unique partnership between the Indian leader and talented Indian-American artists. It has brought global attention to an important cause and this nutritious ancient grain.
