Admin Shillong, October 16, 2023 – Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma visited the site of the devastating fire that destroyed Amit Singhania’s four-story residential-commercial building in Shillong’s Police Bazar area on Saturday.

The massive blaze erupted Saturday evening, completely gutting the building which housed multiple godowns and the Singhania family’s residence.
Nearly two days later, fire crews are still working to fully extinguish pockets of flames within the ruins. The main fire has been contained but is yet to be completely doused.
During his visit, Chief Minister Sangma met with members of the Singhania family to express his sympathies over the tragedy. He also conducted an on-site assessment of the damage along with the Chief Secretary, Director General of Police and other senior officials.
Sangma commended the efforts of the fire department, police, army and local administration in responding swiftly to the emergency situation and managing its impact.
Authorities estimate the damage to be in crores of rupees. In the aftermath of this incident, fire safety mechanisms and procedures in the area are also being reviewed to prevent such accidents in the future.
