While Sunny usually keeps family matters private, he recently discussed how sports – especially cricket – has served as an important connection point with Rajveer over the years. Sunny recalled memories of playing street ‘gully’ cricket in his youth, even confessing to once hitting a friend on the head with a ball during a match.
Sunny emphasized that sports has always been a way for him to spend meaningful time with his son. Whether playing cricket together in Rajveer’s childhood or now supporting his son’s passion for golf as an adult, these shared athletic pursuits have strengthened the Deol father-son relationship through the generations.
By shedding light on these sporty anecdotes and quality time with Rajveer, the normally reserved Sunny Deol has provided a rare glimpse into his life as a dad. It paints a picture of a bond fortified by sports and memories made on the field, pitch, and course over the years.
In an interview with Mashable India, actor Sunny Deol revisited his childhood days playing street ‘gully’ cricket, revealing he once accidentally hit a friend’s head with the hard cricket ball preferred for their games.
Sunny recalled how as kids they always opted to use a hard leather ball rather than a softer rubber one when playing their neighborhood cricket matches. During one intense gully game, Sunny ended up striking one of his young friends in the head with a powerful shot, leading to the other boy needing medical treatment.
Looking back, Sunny emphasizes how passionate and competitive their cricket games used to get, forgoing safer rubber balls for the hard ones used in professional matches. Though he regretted the injury he unintentionally caused, it illustrates Sunny’s own intense and athletic nature even from a young age that occasionally got the better of him during sports.
The veteran actor’s honest admission provides insight into his sports-filled upbringing and hints at the origins of his driven personality that paved the way for his later film career and success.
He told, “We used to play gully cricket a lot. I bashed my friend’s head while playing cricket one day. I have never played cricket with a rubber ball. We always used to play the game with the cricket ball. A rubber ball is not steady, so we played with the cricket ball.”
Sunny Deol’s son Rajveer Deol, who recently made his acting debut in the film Dono, also discussed memories of playing sports with his father. Rajveer reminisced about their time playing volleyball together and how it strengthened their bond.
However, he also lightheartedly revealed how his dad’s habit of over-inflating volleyballs led to Rajveer’s own fingers becoming crooked over time. Sunny’s competitive drive meant he would pump up the volleyballs to maximum capacity, which took a physical toll on young Rajveer’s hands attempting to control the hard hits during their games.
Now an adult pursuing his own acting career, Rajveer can look back with amusement at the high-intensity games of volleyball with his father that, while bringing them closer through sport, also resulted in some harmless long-term effects like Rajveer’s bent fingers. It offers a humorous glimpse into the Deols’ relationship defined by athletic competition and drive.
Even if it meant dealing with rock-hard volleyballs and a few crooked fingers, bonding with his father through sports is a cherished memory for Rajveer as he follows in Sunny Deol’s footsteps on the big screen.
Veteran actor Sunny Deol recently enjoyed major success with the sequel film Gadar 2 surpassing box office expectations. However, Sunny’s sons Karan and Rajveer have faced challenges replicating their father’s level of success with their own acting debuts.
Karan Deol’s launch vehicle Pal Pal Dil Ke Paas in 2019 was declared a critical and commercial flop. Rajveer Deol also struggled to make an impact with his first film Dono earlier this year. Despite Sunny’s star power, Dono failed to cross the 1 crore mark in its first 5 days of release.
While Sunny continues to draw audiences later in his career, his sons have found it difficult to establish themselves even with the Deol family name. Both Karan and now Rajveer were unable to drive the same box office returns and fan excitement that Sunny could garner right from his early hits.
However, Sunny remains proudly supportive of his sons as they look to learn from their setbacks and carve out their own paths despite the lofty expectations placed on new Deol talent based on the success Sunny achieved in his prime. Their strong sporting bonds should help Karan and Rajveer eventually script their own big screen success stories.
